Gaston Co., NC: Grand jury indicts on DWI killing of friend running over friend | Gaston Gazette

A man accused of running over and killing his friend has been indicted on a charge of second-degree murder.

Sybounreuang Keonakhone, 50, remains in Gaston County Jail under a $1 million bond.

According to Mount Holly police, Keonakhone ran over Somvang Thanoulith on May 27 in the parking lot of Asian Market at 605 E. Charlotte Ave.

Keonakhone lived at 427 Hillcrest St., Gastonia, and Thanoulith lived in Charlotte.

The two men were friends and went to the store together around 10:45 p.m., according to Capt. Jim Benfield with Mount Holly Police.

They went into the store but got into an altercation once they came outside of the shop, said Benfield.

There have been conflicting stories given to police, but police believe from witnesses accounts that the men got into an argument over Keonakhone being too drunk to drive, said Benfield.

Keonakhone drove through the parking lot and struck a Dumpster, Benfield said.

Thanoulith was outside of the Dodge Dakota pickup truck assessing the damage when Keonakhone ran him over, according to Benfield.
