A Cicero woman was drunk when she caused the rollover accident that ended with her boyfriend being crushed by the tumbling vehicle, prosecutors said.

Magali Padilla, 24, is charged with reckless homicide and aggravated drunken driving in the December crash in west suburban Riverside that killed Cesar Ramirez, 26, of Woodridge. Her blood alcohol content was measured at 0.17, more than twice the legal limit for driving, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said.

On Sunday, Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered her held on $350,000 bail.

In a hearing midday today, Cook County Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Padilla held in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Police were able to arrest Padilla on Saturday after finding video of Padilla driving a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer as the SUV left a restaurant, Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in a release.

“The video clearly shows Ms. Padilla driving the vehicle and not the male passenger, who was killed in the crash,” according to the news release.

Less than three minutes after Padilla was caught on surveillance video driving the SUV, police received a call regarding the rollover crash, police said.

At the time of the crash, police said it appeared the SUV was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control, struck a curb and rolled over several times, ejecting Ramirez before coming to rest on the front lawn of a home.

Officers at the scene reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man and the woman, who were both taken to Loyola Hospital, police said.

Ramirez died from his injuries about 15 minutes after arriving at the hospital.

Padilla suffered minor injuries. She told police the couple was coming from the restaurant on the 3000 block of South Harlem Avenue in Berwyn.

To prove Padilla was driving the SUV, investigators worked in conjunction with Illinois State Police, and viewed countless hours of video surveillance, Weitzel said.
