Chico, Calif. – Vigil held for bicyclist-victim as organs harvested | chicoer and

Riley Hoover, the 19-year-old who allegedly drove the 2009 GMC Envoy that struck the cyclist, has been arrested under suspicion of felony hit-and-run and driving under the influence causing grave bodily injury, according to Sgt. George Laver of Chico Police’s Major Accident Investigation Team.

The cyclist, identified as Kristina Chesterman of Livermore, was riding north in the northbound bike lane on the bridge when she was struck by the Envoy, Laver said. The northbound vehicle had veered into the Chesterman’s lane for some reason, he said.

Chesterman, also a Chico State University student, was carried on the vehicle’s hood about 120 feet before she came to rest near the driveway to a fueling station north of the bridge. The vehicle carried her bicycle another 210 feet before being dislodged in front of a residence.

Friends and classmates of Chesterman, who graduated from Granada High School just 3 years ago, held a vigil in front of her Livermore home to support her family while they remained by her side at a hospital in Chico.

As of Tuesday night, she remained on life support until her organs could be harvested, having been declared brain dead that afternoon.
