Long Island: Driver arrested for DWI after allegedly striking, killing pedestrian in Lake Ronkonkoma | 7online.com

A man has been arrested on drunk driving charges after an accident that killed a pedestrian on Long Island early Sunday morning.

It happened at 2:30 a.m. in Lake Ronkonkoma.

Police say Thomas Vaughan of Lake Grove was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer westbound on Express Drive North, near Carroll Avenue, when his vehicle struck a male pedestrian who was in the lane of traffic.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Gary Kroll of Lake Ronkonkoma.

The 59-year old Vaughan is charged with Driving While Intoxicated and will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.

A Great Neck man has been accused of drunken driving after the NYPD said he fatally struck a pedestrian on the Long Island Expressway in Queens over the weekend.

Jordan Savvides, 22, of Jericho, was walking along the LIE near Little Neck Parkway when he was hit by a westbound vehicle at 4:24 a.m. Saturday, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, 69-year-old Christian Ludlow, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and vehicular manslaughter.

Arraignment information for Ludlow was not immediately available.

Bus Driver Who Crashed Into House Faces DWI

A mini school bus driver who authorities said passed out behind the wheel and crashed into a house on Long Island while children were aboard has been arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, police said.

Frederick Flowers, 66, was leaving a Catholic elementary school Wednesday afternoon when he had what fire officials initially referred to as a “medical emergency of some kind” and veered into the house on Teibrook Avenue at about 3:15 p.m., authorities said.

The five children on the bus ranged in age from 5 to 8, but none was injured, police said. They attend school at St. Edward the Confessor School.

Flowers remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition at Nassau University Medical Center, according to a hospital spokesperson.

The Massapequa Park man was charged with five counts each of aggravated driving while intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and two counts of driving while intoxicated. He will be arraigned in his hospital bed Thursday afternoon.

A 36-year-old woman was killed while fleeing a Suffolk County police captain who pulled her over in Yaphank on suspicion of drunken driving Monday evening, authorities said.

Melissa Maher, of Brookhaven, was driving her Honda Accord erratically on Yaphank Avenue when Captain Dennis Sullivan stopped her on Mason Street at 7:55 p.m., police said.

Maher, who had her 6-year-old daughter in the car, pleaded with the captain to let her go because she feared her ex-husband, the child’s father, would be upset with her, police said.

The captain ordered her to stand behind her vehicle while he called for backup to conduct field sobriety tests after he smelled alcohol on Maher, police said.

But Maher ran back to her car, drove off and evaded the captain’s attempt to block her from fleeing, police said.

As she pulled back onto Yaphank Avenue, police said Maher’s car was struck on the driver’s side by a northbound Ford pick-up truck, police said.

Maher was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her daughter, Mia, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue and later transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries to her head and extremities.

Chris Meier, 49, of Sayville, Long Island, drove his car while drunk onto a Manhasset golf course and was charged with was charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and DWI.

In golf terms, this was the worst drive imaginable.

A Long Island man was arrested after he drunkenly drove a Ford Taurus onto a private golf club, tearing up the fairways and hitting two golf carts, one of which had golfers in it.

And Chris Meier’s misadventure ended like so many bad drives in golf — in a bunker.

Meier, 49, of Sayville, L.I., intentionally drove onto the grounds of Deepdale Golf Club in Manhasset early Tuesday evening, police said.

No one was hurt, but one golfer had to dive out of one of the carts Meier hit to avoid getting steamrolled, Newsday reported.

After crashing the Ford into a bunker, Meier tried to flee on foot, but was held by club workers until police arrived. He caused more than $10,000 in damage, and was booked for aggravated driving while intoxicated and other raps, police said.

Queens, NY: Construction worker setting up cones on Grand Central Pkwy struck and killed by suspected drunk driver | NY Daily News

Electrician Frank Avino of Ronkokoma, Long Island, was setting up traffic cones on a Queens highway when he was slammed into by a driver suspected of being under the influence Tuesday, police sources said.  Avino died at the scene.

The 63-year-old hardhat was setting up a lane closure on the Manhattan-bound side of the Grand Central Parkway near the Jewel Ave. exit when an Audi cut him down about 11 a.m., cops said.

Police pinched the Audi’s driver, Munshi Abdullah, 26, of Jamaica Hills. He was later booked on charges including vehicular manslaughter, DWI, resisting arrest and driving without a license.

A 19-year-old Long Island woman will serve up to four years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed her friend.

Daritza Lopez wept Tuesday as she told a Nassau County judge that she thinks every day about what she did.

Herica Contreras was the mother of two young children.

Lopez lost control of her vehicle on Nov. 29 in West Hempstead. She hit a parked car, careened across Hempstead Turnpike, entered a closed gasoline station and slammed into a building.

Newsday (http://bit.ly/L3zsHP ) says she pleaded guilty in March to manslaughter, drunken driving and other charges.

Prosecutors had sought 5 to 15 years in prison. The judge granted a defense request for youthful offender status.

Contreras’ sister, Monica Contreras, said no amount of jail time would make things right.

Drunk Woman Drove into House: CopsPolice say a Brooklyn woman was arrested on a DWI charge after her vehicle crashed into a Long Island house.

Suffolk County police say the car stopped in the backyard after hitting the house on Browns Road in Huntington early Monday. Police say the driver failed to turn at the Southdown Road T-section.

A 90-year-old woman and her caretaker were in the house, but were not hurt.

Suffolk County police say Sophia Anderson will be arraigned Tuesday.

Nassau County, NY: Syosset Fatal DWI Crash Driver Sentenced | Long Island Press

A Bronx man has been sentenced to four to 12 years in prison for killing an elderly man and critically injuring his wife in a head-on crash while racing his landscaping truck while drunk in Syosset two years ago.

Everardo Nieto pleaded guilty at Nassau County court in November to second-degree manslaughter, aggravated vehicular assault, assault and driving while intoxicated.

Relatives of a Long Island teen who died in a grisly car wreck blasted a judge yesterday for granting bail to the driver who allegedly caused the crash while on drugs.

Thomas Smith, 20, of Ridge, was hit with a misdemeanor rap of operating a motor vehicle while impaired and held in lieu of $75,000 after the single-car crash, which killed his girlfriend, Jacqueline Sandoval, 19, of Ridge, and Ryan Baumgartner, 17, of Rocky Point.
