WVU freshman quarterback Ford Childress was arrested Thursday morning for driving under the influence of alcohol. According to Morgantown Police, Childress was driving on University Avenue in Morgantown without his headlights on at 12:22 a.m. and was pulled over near Falling Run Road. Childress was driving a blue Chevy Suburban with a Georgia registration. He was the only person in the vehicle.
Police submitted Childress to a sobriety test and he blew a .189. The legal limit is .08. Three different sobriety tests were conduct on Childress. He failed each one. When the officer asked Childress if he had anything to drink he replied, ‘yes, one beer’.
The Mountaineers annual spring game was two days after Ford’s arrest. Although listed as the #3 quarterback earlier in the week, Childress was nowhere to be seen at the game. He was also noticeably absent for the team autograph session prior to kickoff on game day.
DUI Blotter editorial comment: As of this writing, Coach Holgorson has stated he is acquiring facts before announcing any potential disciplinary action. He has also been quoted prior to this incident as stating that red-shirting Childress would be in the best interest of the program. So don’t be surprised if Childress ends up with some form of a one-year team “suspension”, but one that does not preclude a potential fifth year of eligibility.
