Chicago man faces DUI charges after striking pedestrians, killing 1 | chicagotribune.com

Leroy Bobo

Leroy Bobo

A Chicago man was driving while intoxicated on a suspended license when he struck a group of pedestrians waiting to cross a Northwest Side street early Saturday, killing one and seriously injuring two others, prosecutors said today in court.

Leroy Bobo’s blood-alcohol content was more than double the legal limit, Cook County prosecutors said in announcing multiple counts of aggravated DUI, failure to report a fatal accident and driving on a suspended or revoked license.

Bobo, 42, was northbound in the 3100 block of North Central Avenue in the Cragin neighborhood when his 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser struck a parked car at about 12:45 a.m. and then veered into the victims as they stood on the east side of the street waiting to cross, according to court records.

Mario Ortega, 38, of the 4700 block of West Palmer Street, suffered severe blunt force trauma to his head and was pronounced dead at Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center a short time later, the records show.

A 32-year-old woman was taken in critical condition to the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and treated for bleeding to the brain, authorities said. The third victim, a 36-year-old woman, was hospitalized at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center with a fractured hip, records show.

After the crash, Bobo continued north on Central for more than a mile before slamming into a car that was waiting at a red light. Police officers on routine patrol found Bobo behind the wheel of his disabled Chrysler “continuing to press the accelerator in an attempt to leave that scene as well,” a police report states.

Police noted Bobo had bloodshot eyes, mumbled speech and a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. After he was taken to Illinois Masonic, tests revealed his blood-alcohol content was 0.20 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to court records.

Bobo told police he had drunk three glasses of E&J Brandy and smoked marijuana before getting behind the wheel, according to court records.

Judge Israel Desierto set bond for Bobo at $500,000.

Franklin Park, IL: Sheriff’s deputy charged with DUI in fatal Franklin Park accident | chicagotribune.com

A Cook County Sheriff’s deputy has been charged with aggravated drunken-driving in the death of a man Sunday in Franklin Park, authoritiez said.

Jamie O’Malley, 37, who records show has been a sheriff’s deputy since 2003, was expected to appear in Maybrook Branch Court today in connection with the death of Marcial Marias-Quevedo, 41, of Franklin Park, according to police and prosecutors.

Marias-Quevedo was hit by a 2011 Dodge 1500 pickup driven by O’Malley about 1:40 a.m. Sunday near Mannheim Road and Minneapolis Avenue in the west suburb, according to police. The car was headed south on Mannheim just south of Belmont Avenue when the truck hit Marias Quevedo, police said in a news release.

A Cicero woman was drunk when she caused the rollover accident that ended with her boyfriend being crushed by the tumbling vehicle, prosecutors said.

Magali Padilla, 24, is charged with reckless homicide and aggravated drunken driving in the December crash in west suburban Riverside that killed Cesar Ramirez, 26, of Woodridge. Her blood alcohol content was measured at 0.17, more than twice the legal limit for driving, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Barry Quinn said.

On Sunday, Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered her held on $350,000 bail.

In a hearing midday today, Cook County Criminal Court Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. ordered Padilla held in lieu of $350,000 bail.

Police were able to arrest Padilla on Saturday after finding video of Padilla driving a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer as the SUV left a restaurant, Riverside Police Chief Tom Weitzel said in a release.

“The video clearly shows Ms. Padilla driving the vehicle and not the male passenger, who was killed in the crash,” according to the news release.

Less than three minutes after Padilla was caught on surveillance video driving the SUV, police received a call regarding the rollover crash, police said.

At the time of the crash, police said it appeared the SUV was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control, struck a curb and rolled over several times, ejecting Ramirez before coming to rest on the front lawn of a home.

Officers at the scene reported smelling a strong odor of alcohol coming from the man and the woman, who were both taken to Loyola Hospital, police said.

Ramirez died from his injuries about 15 minutes after arriving at the hospital.

Padilla suffered minor injuries. She told police the couple was coming from the restaurant on the 3000 block of South Harlem Avenue in Berwyn.

To prove Padilla was driving the SUV, investigators worked in conjunction with Illinois State Police, and viewed countless hours of video surveillance, Weitzel said.
