Summer vacation is off to a tragic start at a high school in Mesa.

A suspected drunk driver, who police say was going the wrong way on the freeway , slammed into a vehicle driven by a 17-year-old student from Desert Ridge High School Monday night.

Olivia Wilson, a junior and member of the school’s volleyball team, died in the accident.

Tuesday morning, Desert Ridge student Marissa Arbuckle got a text from the volleyball coach that Wilson died the night before.

“She was a great person,” Arbuckle said. “It feels like a dream. It doesn’t seem real.”

Investigators say as Wilson drove south on Interstate 17, she came upon a suspected drunk driver going the wrong way.

The two cars collided near the Van Buren Street exit.

The wrong way driver died instantly and so did Wilson.
