Andrew Michael Ames, 31, of Yankton, S.D., has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide after the truck he was driving ran over and killed 38-year-old Jason Thompson early Monday while they were working on a construction project near Lasting Legacy Park.
Ames and Thompson were both working at the construction site on Veterans Drive, where a new city sewer line is being put in and the road rebuilt.
A witness saw Ames drive over Thompson as he was backing up a dump truck, according to court documents.
The witness “immediately ran towards the dump truck screaming ‘stop’ and waving his arms in the air to get the driver’s attention” but Ames continued driving, according to court documents. Another witness said “he heard a loud ‘yelp’ and turned around and saw the front passenger wheel go over Thompson as he was already on the ground.”
Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene.
