Two law enforcement officers are still recovering after they were shot during an incident in Roane County that took the life of another officer.
The shootings were reported just before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday near a park and ride along Interstate 79.
Sgt. Michael Baylous with the West Virginia State Police tells WSAZ.com the shootings happened after two state troopers pulled over the suspect for reckless driving.
Sources say Oak Hill resident Luke Baber was driving a vehicle near the Route 36 intersection with Interstate 79 at the Wallback exit Tuesday evening. State Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Baylous says troopers stopped Baber because he was driving recklessly. The stop came at the park-and-ride just off the Wallback exit.
Sgt. Baylous says during the processing of Baber and the vehicle Baber somehow pulled a gun and shot both troopers.
Investigators say the suspect got out of the cruiser and then shot a tow truck driver who was called to the scene to pick up the suspect’s car.
“The suspect’s vehicle was being loaded onto a tow truck and the suspect had been placed under arrest, Captain R.D. Stonestreet, WVSP said. “He was in the cruiser. Somehow he managed to get out of his handcuffs or something and actually shot the troopers. Then he climbed outside the car and shot the tow truck driver.”
Corporal Marshall Lee Bailey was pronounced dead at the scene. Trooper Eric Workman was transported to the hospital where he later passed away.
Several police agencies, as well as SWAT Teams, were called to the scene to help search for the suspect.
Baylous tells WSAZ.com the suspect was located about 9:30 p.m. hiding in the area when a Roane County Sheriff’s Deputy caught up with him.
Police say the suspect and deputy got into a shootout. The deputy was shot. He was taken to the hospital, but is expected to be OK.
During this shootout, the suspect was shot and killed.
