Seattle – 1 killed, 5 injured in crash at I-5 off-ramp | komonews.com

One woman was killed and five other people were injured when a car slammed into a barrier Wednesday night along Interstate 5 in Seattle, the Washington State Patrol reported.

Alcohol and excessive speed may have been factors in the crash, troopers said.

The victim, who the State Patrol said was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the back seat of the car and pronounced dead at the scene.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identified her Thursday as Asha Salim.

The State Patrol says it is investigating the possibility of vehicular homicide charges against the driver.

Seattle: Woman dead after morning crash involving possible repeat drunk driver | seattletimes.com

A woman died from her injuries late this morning after a wrong-way driver slammed head-on into her car on Highway 520 near Montlake Boulevard about 5:30 a.m.

Police arrested the driver of the other vehicle and said it appeared he had been drinking. According to court records, the man has a pending DUI case in Tacoma.

The Washington State Patrol says the woman who died is Morgan F. Williams, 58, of Seattle. The driver of the other vehicle, an SUV, was identified as 25-year-old Michael A. Robertson of Tacoma. He suffered a leg injury and was taken to Harborview Medical Center. State Patrol Sgt. John Sager said the man was arrested for investigation of vehicular assault.

Sager said Robertson drove his 1993 Ford Explorer westbound into the eastbound lanes of Highway 520, crashing head-on into Williams’ Mazda Protege. Rescuers had to cut Williams from her car. She was taken to Harborview, where she died, said State Patrol spokesman Bob Calkins. Eastbound traffic was closed for more than two hours.

Tacoma Municipal Court dockets indicate Robertson was arrested by Tacoma police on Dec. 15. He was charged with driving under the influence on Jan. 16. He pleaded not guilty to the charge. Details of the arrest were not immediately available.

In a court appearance on Jan. 31, he was ordered by a judge not to drive without a valid license and to not drink or take drugs, according to the docket. The judge did not order that Robertson have an alcohol-sensing interlock system installed on his car in order to drive.

The victim, Williams, who lived in North Seattle, was on her way to work at Eddie Bauer in Redmond at the time of the collision, said her younger brother, Matt Fick.

Williams grew up in Oak Harbor and was student body president at Oak Harbor High School, Fick said. She earned her accounting degree from the University of Washington in 1977 and has worked for Eddie Bauer for three decades, he said. The mother of two adult children, Williams kept in regular touch with her extended family and various circles of friends, Fick said.

Seattle: Suspected drunken driver held after mom and baby hurt, grandparents killed |usnews.nbcnews.com

A suspected drunken driver slammed into a family crossing the street in a residential Seattle neighborhood, critically injuring a baby and his mother and killing his grandparents, authorities said. The grandparents had recently moved from the Midwest to be near the newborn child.

Karina Schulte, 33, and her 10-day-old son were in critical condition Tuesday afternoon, said Liz Hunter, a spokeswoman for Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Grandparents Dennis Schulte, 66, and Judith Schulte, 68, died at the scene Monday.

Judith Schulte’s sister, Susan Morton, said the retired Indiana couple were walking Monday afternoon with their daughter-in-law and the baby when they were stuck.

Karina Schulte “had the baby in a sling on the front. He just hit all four of them,” said Morton, of Cottonwood, Minn., in a telephone interview.

Mark Mullan, 50, was ordered held on $2.5 million bail during a court hearing Tuesday. He is being held on investigation of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. Prosecutors have until Thursday to formally charge him.

In court documents, a Seattle police officer investigating the crash said he smelled alcohol on Mullan’s breath and that Mullan showed impairment during sobriety tests. A preliminary test showed a blood-alcohol level of 0.22 percent, nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08, the officer said in court documents.

Mullan told police he was unable to see the pedestrians at an intersection in a residential neighborhood because the sun was in his eyes, according to court documents.

His license was suspended at the time of the crash, according to the documents.

“He does not have a valid license,” said Brad Benfield, a spokesman with the Department of Licensing.

It was unclear Tuesday whether Mullan had legal representation. A message left with an attorney who represented him in a drunken driving case in December was not immediately returned Tuesday.

Mullan didn’t answer reporters’ questions as police led him away from the scene of the crash in handcuffs Monday. Police said he stopped after the crash and was cooperative. A phone number listed for Mullan was disconnected.

As part of a hidden camera report on drunk driving during this holiday season, watch one driver appear to be a drunken mess. Will that push anyone to stop him from driving? Dateline NBC’s Andrea Canning reports.

Morton said Karina Schulte, who is from Chile, is a pediatric nurse specialist and is dedicated to her work.

Dennis and Judith Schulte were both longtime high school teachers; she taught English and was a head guidance counselor for years, while he taught math.

They had moved to Seattle from Kokomo, Ind., in February to witness the birth of their first grandson.

They had planned to spend six months in Seattle to be near their son and his family. They were renting an apartment near the intersection where they were killed.

“They were so elated. This is their only grandchild,” Morton said. “They wanted to be there when he was born. They got to hold him and be there with him for 10 days.”

Tacoma: Boy, 9, taken off of life support for injuries received in suspected DUI crash | komonews.com

A 9-year-old boy injured in a DUI crash died late Sunday after his family removed him from life support.

Nearly every member of Donovan Best’s family came to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital on Sunday, hoping the boy could recover from his injuries. But doctors said tests showed no brain activity, and the family made the decision to turn off the breathing machine.

The third-grader was thrown from a car early Saturday on Highway 16 in Purdy, and state troopers say the boy’s uncle was drunk and high on drugs when he lost control of the car and crashed.

Jayce L. Randall remains under suicide watch in a hospital room and will be booked into jail for investigation of vehicular homicide when he is released.

“Our family is suffering the consequence of his bad decision that night,” said Karrie Lewandowski, Donovan’s great aunt.

Randall had spent Saturday evening at a family barbecue and offered to drive Donovan and his younger sister to their grandparents’ house. The kids’ mother agreed, so they piled into the car.

“Jayce is not a bad kid. He’s your average 26 year old,” said Donovan’s great uncle, Dale Lewandowski. “He went through a bottle of tequila, had a few too many drinks. He has never had a police record. He has never had a DUI.”

The force of the crash also ejected Randall, who suffered a broken pelvis. His 8-year-old niece climbed out of the wrecked car and flagged down help.

Relatives say Randall is devastated.

“You have a family here that is suffering two-fold. Our nephew who is on suicide watch, to our little nephew Donovan,” Karrie Lewandowski said.

Investigators say Randall’s blood-alcohol level was twice the legal limit and that he admitted to also smoking marijuana.

Troopers say Randall’s niece told them she and her brother were yelling at their uncle to slow down before the crash.

The family says they don’t believe Randall intended to put the children in danger.

“We’d like to send the message also that you cannot get behind the wheel of a car when you’re drinking or smoking marijuana. You just can’t,” Dale Lewandowski said.

Mill Creek, WA: DUI judge arrested on suspicion of DUI | HeraldNet.com

A south Snohomish County judge who presides over drunken-driving cases now faces a possible DUI charge of his own after his arrest Wednesday night.

The Washington State Patrol stopped Snohomish County District Court Judge Timothy Ryan on the Bothell-Everett Highway, between 183rd and 186th Street SE, shortly after 9 p.m.

Ryan, 65, was driving an Acura TSX sedan south on the highway when a trooper noticed the car drift multiple times outside its lane, patrol Sgt. Kirk Rudeen said. The car also reached 53 mph in a 45 mph zone, according to an arrest report.

“It was a combination of lane-travel violations and speed,” Rudeen said.

After the stop, the trooper described Ryan as cooperative and polite, but noted that he smelled of alcohol, Rudeen said.

The arresting trooper wrote in his report that he also noticed Ryan’s eyes were bloodshot and watery and that his face was flushed.

The trooper noted that Ryan early on told him that he is a judge, and also lived nearby.

A second trooper was contacted and asked to observe the traffic stop investigation. He also described Ryan as having bloodshot and watery eyes.

“As Ryan responded to … questions, his speech was slurred and there was a strong odor of intoxicants coming from him,” that trooper wrote.

Kent, WA: Teen charged with vehicular homicide after suspected alcohol-fueled crash kills motorcyclist | seattlepi.com

An 18-year-old Kent man has been charged with vehicular homicide after hitting and killing a motorcyclist Wednesday morning.

Police say Justin Cordova was drunk when he lost control of his car, crossed the center line on Southeast 223rd Drive and crashed into a 56-year-old motorcyclist. The man, who was also from Kent, was thrown from his bike.

Police and medics attempted to save the rider, but he died after being rushed to a hospital.

Traffic investigators spent Wednesday morning at the crash site collecting evidence.

“From the beginning the evidence from this crime spoke for itself,” Kent Assistant Police Chief Pat Lowery said in a Friday news release. “This investigation became a matter of putting the pieces back together to tell the whole story, which is the basis for this charge”.

Cordova was arrested at the scene and taken to the Kent City Corrections Center. He was later transferred to the Regional Justice Center.

His bail was set at $100,000.

Kirkland, WA: Head-On Crash Kills Woman on Juanita Drive; DUI Suspected – Kirkland, WA Patch

A 41-year-old woman who Kirkland Police say was at fault in a fatal head-on crash on Juanita Drive Tuesday night has been booked into the King County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide.

Kelly Hudson, whose hometown has not yet been released, showed signs of intoxication at the scene, Kirkland Police say. Furthermore, they say a police dispatcher was on the phone with a person reporting a “possible drunk driver” on Juanita Drive at the very moment of the crash.

The four passengers were trapped inside the car. One of them, a woman, was pronounced dead at the scene when Kirkland Firefighters were able to cut them out of the vehicle.

Bothell resident Tom Kamm told the Reporter that his father Arthur Kamm of Bellevue was the driver of the sedan and it was his 79-year-old aunt, Kirkland resident Joyce Parsons who died in the crash.

The three survivors were taken to hospitals, one to EvergreenHealth Medical Center in Kirkland and the other to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Kirkland Police spokesman Sgt. Rob Saloum said officers were investigating the female driver of the car that crossed the centerline for possibly driving under the influence.

“We had received calls on this vehicle, so it looks like a possible DUI,” he said.

Burlington, WA: Driver tells officer, ‘It’s OK, I’m home,’ after crash into State Patrol building | kirotv.com

Crash into WSP buildingPolice said a drunken driving suspect who flew off a highway and crashed through a Washington State Patrol office told an officer, “It’s OK, I’m home,” as he sat in his car after the wreck.

Investigators said the man was on Highway 11 Sunday night when his car left the road and crashed through the State Patrol Vehicle Identification building in Burlington.

“Of all the places you could crash your vehicle while drunk, the fact you crash into a state patrol office, in my opinion, is pretty ironic,” said Trooper Mark Francis.

Police said the 52-year-old man drove into the building with such force that his car bounced off a steel beam and spun around.

Photos from the scene showed that two-thirds of one side of the structure was ripped apart when the man’s Mercedes rammed through it and came to rest inside the building.
