A Bluffton man has been charged with felony DUI following a one-car wreck in Bluffton late Tuesday that left his passenger dead, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Eduardo Santos-Gomez, 22, of Bluffton, was driving a maroon 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse east on Bluffton Parkway when his car struck a raised median near the entrance of the Lakes at Myrtle Park apartments about 9:20 p.m., Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said.
The car then hit a tree off the right side of the road, entrapping Santos-Gomez and his passenger, 22-year-old Jose Alfredo Santos-Garcia of Bluffton, Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott said.
Both men were wearing seat belts.
Santos-Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, Ott said.
Santos-Gomez was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. Upon his release, he was charged with felony DUI and no S.C. driver’s license and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
Santos-Gomez is being held pending a bond hearing.
Additional details, including the suspect’s blood alcohol level, were not available Wednesday. The investigation is ongoing and a final toxicology report could take several months, Wimberly said.
