Charleston County, SC: Man, 20, charged with felony DUI in 17-year-old’s death |

Charleston County sheriff’s deputies have charged a man with felony driving under the influence in connection with a wreck that killed a Johns Island teen Saturday afternoon.

James Bryson Munn, 20, of Blaine Court in Charleston, is also charged with being a minor in possession of beer or alcohol, according to sheriff’s deputies.

He will be booked at the Cannon Detention Center after he’s released from Medical University Hospital, Sheriff’s Maj. Eric Watson said.

Kylie Gillette, 17, died at the scene of the wreck around 12:30 p.m. near the intersection of River and Main roads, authorities said.

An incident report released Monday revealed that Munn was seen speeding past multiple cars in a 2006 Chevy Equinox shortly before the vehicle ran off the right side of the road. The vehicle then over corrected, crossing the center line and striking Gillete’s 2011 Jeep Compass head on, the report said.

Officers who met with Munn at MUSC reported that he had bloodshot, watery eyes and slurred speech, according to the report.

The felony DUI charge was Munn’s first in South Carolina, State Law Enforcement Division Records show.

Sumter Co., SC: Two dead in Sunday DUI crash |

The Sumter County Coroner says a driver in a deadly accident Sunday was drunk. 65-year-old Ronald W. Holmes and his 7 year old grandson died in the wreck.

Coroner Harvin Bullock tells News19 that Holmes’ blood alcohol content was nearly three times the legal limit to drive.

The SC Highway Patrol says Holmes was driving a Lincoln Town Car on North Main Street around 5:45 p.m. Sunday and crossed over the white line, hitting a 2003 Ford Expedition. The accident took place in front of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

6 people inside the Expedition were taken to hospitals for treatment. Some of the victims had to be airlifted from the scene.

A Clinton man faces felony DUI charges after a single-car crash on I-26 that claimed a teen girl’s life early Sunday morning.

Troopers with the SC Highway Patrol said the crash happened six miles south of Woodruff on the eastbound side of I-26, around 12:50 a.m.

Troopers said Rasheed Reeves, 23, was driving drunk when his 2005 Ford Crown Victoria ran off the left side of the roadway, then veered back across the interstate and hit a guard rail on the right side.

Troopers said Reeves and a 16-year-old Greenwood girl were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the car. Both were taken to the hospital where the girl later died.

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Shykeria Lyle-Daja Watts of Cemetery Road.

The coroner said Watts died just before 3 a.m. An autopsy and toxicology exams have been ordered.

A third person was in the car and was not hurt, troopers said.

Reeves was subsequently charged with felony driving under the influence with death or great bodily injury, troopers said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says a pedestrian died in an early-morning wreck Saturday in Spartanburg County.

Troopers said the crash happened on Chesnee Highway near Gossett Road at 1:20 a.m.  Highway Patrol said Jason Barrett, 40, of Chesnee, was driving south on Chesnee Highway when his Dodge Avenger struck Doyle Ray Burke, 46, of Chesnee, who was walking down the highway. This caused Burke’s body to be flung into the northbound lane where he was struck by two other cars.

The Spartanburg County Coroner said Burke was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy will be performed.Troopers said Barrett has been charged with one count of felony driving under the influence and was taken to the Spartanburg County Detention Center. Barrett and the other two drivers weren’t hurt.

Florence, SC: Man killed while mowing lawn by alleged drunk driver who ran off road |

Troopers charged a Florence man with felony DUI and child endangerment after the pickup truck he was driving south on Savannah Grove Road ran off the left side of the road and then struck and killed a man who was mowing his grass.

Christopher Powell, 28, 2221 McLaurin Drive, was booked into the Florence County Detention Center at 2:11 a.m. by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, according to the detention center’s Web site. He is charged with one count each of felony DUI resulting in death and child endangerment for committing certain offenses with a minor in the car, according to the Web site.

Florence County Coroner Keith von Lutcken identified the pedestrian who was struck and killed as Juan Luna Ortuno, 35, of the Effingham area.

Aiken Co., SC – Driver charged with DUI after fatal crash kills wife |

The driver in an Aiken County crash that killed his wife is facing more charges.

Michael Williams was driving a late model Chevy pick-up truck on East Frontage Road near Wire Road when he crossed lanes in a curve and ran off the road before 8:30 Sunday night, South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers said. The truck rolled over several times.

Officials say he is being charged with felony DUI, open container, unsafe tires and driving under suspension.

He was not wearing a seat belt at the time, according to Highway Patrol. Williams was taken to Lexington Hospital with serious, but non life-threatening injuries.

The driver’s wife, Kim Williams, was the only passenger and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Aiken County Coroner said that a toxicology report is pending.

An Upstate man is charged with felony DUI after crashing into another car and killing the driver while trying to elude police, according to Travelers Rest police.

A 70-year-old man died after a car accident Wednesday night, according to the Greenville County coroner Parks Evans.

The warrants say Robert Lewis Frady, Jr. is also charged with failure to stop for blue lights and driving under suspension.

Travelers Rest police say Frady was the driver of an SUV that was trying to elude police and crashed into Donald Ray Brown’s car on April 23 on Tubbs Mountain Road.

According to Travelers Rest Police Chief Lance Crowe, an officer observed a black SUV pass another car on a double yellow line headed toward the officer. The car actually came into the officer’s lane of traffic then got back into the proper lane.

After the SUV passed the officer, the officer turned on blue lights and siren, and turned around to try to stop the SUV, Crowe said.

According to Crowe, the SUV turned onto Tubbs Mountain Road at a far distance from the officer.

The officer considered all the circumstances and decided to call off the attempt to stop the SUV. The officer turned onto another street and turned off the lights and siren, said Crowe.

According to Crowe, the officer turned back onto Tubbs Mountain and started searching the area for the SUV. The officer came upon a two-car collision a short time later.

Greenville County Coroner Parks Evans said Brown’s car was struck on the driver’s side by an SUV.

Police say that SUV was driven by Frady.

Brown was trapped in the vehicle and once extricated was flown to Greenville Memorial Trauma Center, where he died, Evans said.

Orangeburg, SC – Man charged with DUI in connection with deadly dirt bike crash |

An Orangeburg man has been charged with felony driving under the influence after his vehicle hit a dirt bike, killing the biker.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported that 36-year-old Travis Morgan died after the collision around 7 p.m. Sunday off U.S. 21 south of Orangeburg.

Forty-one-year-old Shareef Shabazz has been charged in the case.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Shabazz’s vehicle ran into the back of Morgan’s off-road motorcycle.

Dillon Co., S.C. – Woman charged with DUI in wreck that killed her mother |

Samantha Carmichael, 31, of Dillon County is charged with Felony DUI and Driving Under Suspension in a wreck that killed her mother, Ore Lee Carmichael, 66, according to Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley.

The wreck happened Sunday night on Joann Branch Road near Lake View.

Officers say Samantha Carmichael ran off the road and crashed.

Her mother Ore Lee was a passenger in the car and died later that night at the hospital.

Highway Patrol says neither of the women were wearing seat belts.

Friends say the family is devastated and still in shock over what happened.

Carmichael remains behind bars at the Dillon County Detention Center.

Berkeley Co., SC – Woman charged after father killed in DUI wreck |

A woman has been charged with felony DUI following a Saturday night wreck that took the life of her 67-year-old father, according to officials.

Jamie Shuler was arrested Saturday and charged with driving under suspension, open container in motor vehicle, and felony DUI with great bodily injury.

According to Highway Patrol, a GMC Yukon and a Chevy pickup driven by Jamie Shuler were both traveling north on Highway 45 around 6:55 p.m. As the Yukon slowed to make a left turn into a driveway, the truck attempted to pass the SUV in a no pass zone, sideswiping the vehicle.

Both vehicles ended up in a ditch as a result of the collision, troopers report.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says the front seat passenger in the truck, 67-year-old James Shuler of Jamestown, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force body trauma. Shuler was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Salisbury.

The coroner says four others were transported to a nearby hospital.

Jamie Shuler is being held at the Hill Finklea Detention Center.

Monday, 19-year-old accused drunk driver Austin Shackleford went before a Cherokee County magistrate where he was read the charges against him and denied bond.

Cherokee County deputies say Shackleford was driving under the influence on Highway 110 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when he struck a car head-on killing the driver and injuring three passengers.

According to the judge, his charges include one count felony DUI with death, three counts felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury, three counts failure to stop for blue lights resulting in great bodily injury and an open container charge.

During the hearing Shackleford expressed his condolences.

“I am sorry. I wish I could take her place. I wish I never jumped in that vehicle,” Shackleford said.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Tanya Jean Tiede, 43, died when her Dodge Intrepid was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Lumina being driven by 19-year-old Austin Shackleford.

Fowler said Tiede’s mother, 65-year-old Sandra Effler, her husband 44-year-old Chris Tiede and 11-year-old daughter Hannah Tiede were in the car during the crash and were taken to the hospital. As of Monday morning all three were still being treated. Hannah and Sandra are in ICU with severe injuries, according to solicitor Barry Barnette.

Columbia Police have charged a man with felony DUI after an early-morning crash that killed a passenger in his vehicle.

Police accuse 19-year-old Benjamin Hampton of speeding on Veterans Road in Southeast Columbia just before 4 a.m. Friday when his vehicle crashed into a tree. Hampton is accused of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

A passenger in Hampton’s vehicle, 19-year-old Davon Bryant of Columbia, died at the scene, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Police say Hampton and a 17-year-old passenger in the rear seat were removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital, where they are in critical condition. The 17-year-old victim’s name has not been released.

Columbia Police are investigating the crash.

It happened around 11:15 p.m. on near 3800 Fish Hatchery Road.

Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said a motorcycle struck a pickup as the truck was making a left hand turn.

Jones said the driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman identified the victim as Donnie Ray Gunter, 43, of Gaston.

The driver of the pickup truck, 23-year-old Jesse Anderson, was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center and charged with felony driving under the influence.

A man was charged with felony DUI after he caused a wrong-way fatal crash on Interstate 20 Sunday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said Jessie Samuels was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when he collided with another driver near mile marker 68 around 5:45 a.m.

The victim, 41-year-old Donald Jerome Ford, of Columbia, was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Samuels and a passenger were transported to Palmetto Health Richland. Their conditions are not known.

A woman was arrested after police said she caused a deadly three-car crash Monday afternoon.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Celanese Road in Rock Hill.

Officials said Cassie Cunningham, 36, was booked into the Moss Justice Center and charged with DUI involving death. She was not hurt in the crash.

Paramedics rushed the driver of a Kia Rio — 22-year-old Kristen Knight — to Piedmont Medical Center, where she died.

A third vehicle, a Toyota Camry, was also involved in the crash, but the driver was not hurt.
