An Orangeburg man has been charged with felony driving under the influence after his vehicle hit a dirt bike, killing the biker.

The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg reported that 36-year-old Travis Morgan died after the collision around 7 p.m. Sunday off U.S. 21 south of Orangeburg.

Forty-one-year-old Shareef Shabazz has been charged in the case.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Shabazz’s vehicle ran into the back of Morgan’s off-road motorcycle.

Samantha Carmichael, 31, of Dillon County is charged with Felony DUI and Driving Under Suspension in a wreck that killed her mother, Ore Lee Carmichael, 66, according to Dillon County Coroner Donnie Grimsley.

The wreck happened Sunday night on Joann Branch Road near Lake View.

Officers say Samantha Carmichael ran off the road and crashed.

Her mother Ore Lee was a passenger in the car and died later that night at the hospital.

Highway Patrol says neither of the women were wearing seat belts.

Friends say the family is devastated and still in shock over what happened.

Carmichael remains behind bars at the Dillon County Detention Center.

A woman has been charged with felony DUI following a Saturday night wreck that took the life of her 67-year-old father, according to officials.

Jamie Shuler was arrested Saturday and charged with driving under suspension, open container in motor vehicle, and felony DUI with great bodily injury.

According to Highway Patrol, a GMC Yukon and a Chevy pickup driven by Jamie Shuler were both traveling north on Highway 45 around 6:55 p.m. As the Yukon slowed to make a left turn into a driveway, the truck attempted to pass the SUV in a no pass zone, sideswiping the vehicle.

Both vehicles ended up in a ditch as a result of the collision, troopers report.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury says the front seat passenger in the truck, 67-year-old James Shuler of Jamestown, was pronounced dead at the scene from blunt force body trauma. Shuler was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Salisbury.

The coroner says four others were transported to a nearby hospital.

Jamie Shuler is being held at the Hill Finklea Detention Center.

Monday, 19-year-old accused drunk driver Austin Shackleford went before a Cherokee County magistrate where he was read the charges against him and denied bond.

Cherokee County deputies say Shackleford was driving under the influence on Highway 110 around 10:30 p.m. Saturday when he struck a car head-on killing the driver and injuring three passengers.

According to the judge, his charges include one count felony DUI with death, three counts felony DUI resulting in great bodily injury, three counts failure to stop for blue lights resulting in great bodily injury and an open container charge.

During the hearing Shackleford expressed his condolences.

“I am sorry. I wish I could take her place. I wish I never jumped in that vehicle,” Shackleford said.

Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said Tanya Jean Tiede, 43, died when her Dodge Intrepid was hit head-on by a Chevrolet Lumina being driven by 19-year-old Austin Shackleford.

Fowler said Tiede’s mother, 65-year-old Sandra Effler, her husband 44-year-old Chris Tiede and 11-year-old daughter Hannah Tiede were in the car during the crash and were taken to the hospital. As of Monday morning all three were still being treated. Hannah and Sandra are in ICU with severe injuries, according to solicitor Barry Barnette.

Columbia Police have charged a man with felony DUI after an early-morning crash that killed a passenger in his vehicle.

Police accuse 19-year-old Benjamin Hampton of speeding on Veterans Road in Southeast Columbia just before 4 a.m. Friday when his vehicle crashed into a tree. Hampton is accused of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

A passenger in Hampton’s vehicle, 19-year-old Davon Bryant of Columbia, died at the scene, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

Police say Hampton and a 17-year-old passenger in the rear seat were removed from the vehicle and taken to the hospital, where they are in critical condition. The 17-year-old victim’s name has not been released.

Columbia Police are investigating the crash.

It happened around 11:15 p.m. on near 3800 Fish Hatchery Road.

Lance Cpl. Judd Jones said a motorcycle struck a pickup as the truck was making a left hand turn.

Jones said the driver of the motorcycle was not wearing a helmet and died at the scene.

Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman identified the victim as Donnie Ray Gunter, 43, of Gaston.

The driver of the pickup truck, 23-year-old Jesse Anderson, was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center and charged with felony driving under the influence.

A man was charged with felony DUI after he caused a wrong-way fatal crash on Interstate 20 Sunday morning, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Lance Cpl. Sonny Collins said Jessie Samuels was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when he collided with another driver near mile marker 68 around 5:45 a.m.

The victim, 41-year-old Donald Jerome Ford, of Columbia, was transported to Palmetto Health Richland Memorial Hospital where he died, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Samuels and a passenger were transported to Palmetto Health Richland. Their conditions are not known.

A woman was arrested after police said she caused a deadly three-car crash Monday afternoon.

The crash happened around 4 p.m. on Celanese Road in Rock Hill.

Officials said Cassie Cunningham, 36, was booked into the Moss Justice Center and charged with DUI involving death. She was not hurt in the crash.

Paramedics rushed the driver of a Kia Rio — 22-year-old Kristen Knight — to Piedmont Medical Center, where she died.

A third vehicle, a Toyota Camry, was also involved in the crash, but the driver was not hurt.

A man driving his motorized wheelchair on a secondary road in Sumter County was struck and killed by a motorist who drove up behind him in a mini-van, the S.C. Highway Patrol reported.

The driver was charged with driving under the influence and was taken to the Sumter County jail, Sgt. the patrol reported.

The suspect was identified as J.L. Haynesworth, 70, said Sgt. Bob Beres.

The incident took place on S.C. 49 about 6:50 p.m., almost an hour after sunset.

The wheelchair was traveling west on that road, as was Haynesworth’s 1994 Mazda mini-van, Beres said.

The deceased’s identity will be made public later.

A 28-year-old Conway woman faces three driving under the influence charges following a fatal Jan. 25 car crash.

Brittany Lewis, 28, Conway, was arrested Saturday and charged with two counts of driving under the influence resulting in death and one count of driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury.

On Jan. 25, Lewis was driving a 2011 Chevrolet pick-up truck west on Bucksport Road at around 5:20 p.m. when she failed to stop at the sign at the intersection of Highway 701, according to Cpl. Sonny Collins of the S.C. Highway Patrol. That vehicle struck a Ford sedan that was traveling southbound on S.C. 701. Two people, Jacklyn Marie Cohen, 18, of Conway and Ryan Marsh, 22, of Little River, died from multiple blunt force injuries caused by the crash.

All four occupants in the Chevrolet and one occupant from the Ford were taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center for treatment. Their conditions were unknown Saturday.

A Bluffton man has been charged with felony DUI following a one-car wreck in Bluffton late Tuesday that left his passenger dead, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Eduardo Santos-Gomez, 22, of Bluffton, was driving a maroon 1996 Mitsubishi Eclipse east on Bluffton Parkway when his car struck a raised median near the entrance of the Lakes at Myrtle Park apartments about 9:20 p.m., Senior Trooper Hannah Wimberly said.

The car then hit a tree off the right side of the road, entrapping Santos-Gomez and his passenger, 22-year-old Jose Alfredo Santos-Garcia of Bluffton, Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott said.

Both men were wearing seat belts.

Santos-Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene, Ott said.

Santos-Gomez was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. Upon his release, he was charged with felony DUI and no S.C. driver’s license and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center.

Santos-Gomez is being held pending a bond hearing.

Additional details, including the suspect’s blood alcohol level, were not available Wednesday. The investigation is ongoing and a final toxicology report could take several months, Wimberly said.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly wreck that killed two young sisters.

Trooper Billy Elder says it happened 2:15 a.m. Wednesday on Wells Highway in Oconee County. He says a Dodge Durango was traveling east when it hit a sign at Utica Baptist Church and flipped, landing on church property.

According to the Oconee County Coroner’s office, 1-year-old Taniyia Gambrell and her 4-year-old sister, Saryia Patton-Dean, were both killed. They say Taniyia was in a child safety seat and died at the scene. Saryia was wearing a seatbelt, she was transported to Oconee Medical Center where she died.

The coroner said both girls appeared to have died from head injuries.

Elder identified the driver as Melissa Patton, 32. The coroner’s office says Patton was the mother of both children. She was taken to the hospital along with a male passenger.

According to jail officials, Patton has been charged with two counts of felony DUI, one count of driving under suspension. Patton faced a bond court judge Wednesday morning. Her bond was set at $50,652.

A White Knoll High School student is dead and a 60-year-old Lexington man is charged with felony DUI following a Friday morning crash.

Brandon T. Mayo, 15, of Lexington was killed in the two-vehicle crash, according to the Lexington County Coroner Harry Harman. According to the S.C. Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly before 8 a.m. at Old Barnwell Road near White Knoll Way. Mayo was driving a 2002 Pontiac two-door when he collided with a 2012 Honda Pilot.

The Pilot was driven by 60-year-old Michael Gray of Lexington. Lance Cpl. David Jones with the SCHP said Gray has been charged with felony DUI resulting in death, as well as possession of a controlled substance.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts.

Mayo was pronounced dead at the scene. Gray was transported to the hospital.

A Moore woman was charged last week in an alcohol-related crash that authorities say killed an elderly woman in October.

Lt. Jim Holcombe said Sherra L. Werkmeister, 48, of 245 Glen Crest Drive, was charged with felony driving under the influence resulting in death and felony DUI resulting in great bodily harm.

The Oct. 11 crash on Highway 290 killed 85-year-old Arrie Lee Lowry, of 101 Kelly Ave., Greer, according to a Greer Police Department incident report.

Orangeburg, S.C. – Suspected DUI driver jailed after fatal crash | wistv.com

A man suspected of driving under the influence was arrested early Saturday after a fatal crash in Orangeburg County.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Sgt. Bob Beres said Robert Jennings, 20, was driving west on Riverbank Drive around 1 a.m. when he attempted to pass another vehicle when the collision occurred.

The driver of the other vehicle died as a result of their injuries and two passengers were transported to a local hospital, Beres said. Their conditions are not known.

Beres said Jennings was not injured.

Jennings is now facing two counts of felony DUI, Beres said.  He is currently in the Orangeburg County jail awaiting a bond hearing.
