Gatha M. Dyer
A 33-year-old man was charged late Monday in the deadly hit and run of a 11-year-old boy – and police said he was driving drunk when he left the child to die on a sidewalk in southwest Atlanta.
Mr. Gatha M. Dyer was charged with first-degree vehicular homicide, DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving, according to Atlanta police.
He was also charged with driving with a suspended license, failure to yield and failure to maintain lane, police spokeswoman Officer Kim Jones said.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the child as Patrick Williams, 11, of Riverdale.
Around 5:30 p.m. officers responded to Boulder Park Drive and Brownlee Road after getting a report of a child struck by a vehicle, according to Atlanta police.
Officers arrived to find the child deceased on the sidewalk, police spokesman Officer John Chafee said.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle was traveling east on Boulder Park Drive when it struck the child as he crossed the street,” Officer Chafee said. “The vehicle then left the scene.”
The suspected driver later turned himself in to police in Clayton County, Officer Chafee said.
Mr. Dyer remained in the Fulton County jail Tuesday on $8,200 bond, according to booking records.
