Police say a driver arrested in a weekend crash that left an elderly woman dead was drunk when he slammed his 2013 BMW into the back of the woman’s car.
Newark Police announced the arrest Monday morning of Newark, Del. resident Robert Perago.
Investigators say Perago, 53, was under the influence of alcohol when he smashed his BMW into a 2007 Toyota Camry stopped for a red light in the right lane of Christina Parkway at South College Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
The crash caused heavy rear damage to the Camry and heavy front end damage to the BMW. Witnesses say Perago tried to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended by responding police officers.
Camry rear seat passenger, 90-year-old Cora Williamson, of Wilmington, died at the hospital.
Perago is charged with second-degree vehicular homicide and DUI. Police say this is his third DUI arrest. He was released from custody after posting $12,000 bail.

A young girl is dead and a man is in custody after an alleged DUI crash in Delaware.
Police say a 19-year-old man was driving a 1999 Chevrolet Trailblazer eastbound on John J. Williams Highway around 9:20 p.m. on Saturday in Lewes. Police say the Trailblazer stopped and had its left turn signal activated as the driver prepared to make a left turn into a driveway.
At the same time, police say 24-year-old Henry Mazariegos of Georgetown, Delaware, was driving a 2002 Mazda Protégé eastbound on John J. Williams. Police say Mazariegos failed to observe the Trailblazer and struck the back of the vehicle.
Police say 2-year-old Genesis Santizo was a passenger in the back of Mazariegos’ car. The young girl was not properly secured in her seat and the seat wasn’t properly secured in the vehicle, according to investigators. The impact of the crash caused her to be ejected and propelled forward inside the car.
Santizo was taken to the Beebe Hospital where she was pronounced dead due to traumatic injuries.
After further investigation, police say they determined Mazariegos was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. He was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, driving under the influence and other related offenses.
Mazariegos was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on $13,001 cash bond. Police have not yet revealed his relationship with the young victim.

Delaware State Police have charged a Florida man with vehicular homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol after a bicyclist was struck and killed in Rehoboth.
It happened about 2 a.m. Sunday on Coastal Highway. Troopers say 44-year-old Russell Henman of Snow Hill, Md., was riding his bike when a Jeep operated by 38-year-old Brian Meegan of Fort Lauderdale struck the bike.
Police say Henman was thrown onto the hood and was carried about 400 feet until the Jeep hit a curb, throwing him to the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Troopers say Meegan fled the scene, stopped in a parking lot, and removed the bicycle from under the vehicle. He was arrested a short time later.
Meegan is being held on $27,700 cash bail.
