A pregnant woman was critically injured and lost her baby Thursday afternoon when a multiple DUI-offender driving an SUV struck her vehicle at 17th Avenue and Pace Street and then fled the scene, police reported Thursday night.
Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur, said a witness followed Gary Sheats, a 52-year-old man who was driving a Dodge Durango and caused the wreck near the intersection of Pace Street and 17th Avenue. The witness led police to Sheats, who stopped on the 1200 block of Winslow Circle Thursday night.
The driver of the Dodge Durango was traveling south on Pace Street and struck a white Pontiac sedan driven by the 27-year-old pregnant woman, who was driving east on 17th Avenue. The impact sent the sedan into a spin, causing it to hit a black Honda Pilot waiting in the left turn lane of westbound 17th Avenue, according to Longmont Police Cmdr. Jeff Satur.
The pregnant driver, Heather Surovik, 27, was left in critical condition and she lost her baby, who was in the third trimester. A 48-year-old woman who was in the passenger seat was seriously injured and a 5-year-old boy in the back seat suffered minor injuries, Satur said.
Sheats, who will make his first court appearance at 2 p.m. Friday, also has a lengthy list of prior violations, according to a Longmont Police Department release.
In the past, he has been charged with two felony counts of vehicular assault, one felony count of leaving the scene of an accident after causing injuries, leaving the scene of an accident, driving under the influence, driving under the influence with a BAC greater than .08, driving under the Influence with three or more prior arrests, disregarding a traffic control device, driving while driver’s License is under restraint, possession of less than one ounce marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.
