Police in Fremont believe a suspected drunk driver is responsible for a fatal accident. The crash shut down a major thoroughfare in the city during the morning commute.
The intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road will remain closed until 3 p.m. today as police continue to investigate a fatal traffic crash, police said.
The driver of a white Mini Cooper struck a motorcyclist on Fremont Boulevard while fleeing from police early this morning, according to Geneva Bosques, a police spokeswoman.
Police began pursuing the driver, Alexander Yohn, 23, after an employee at a Taco Bell drive-thru reported him as being belligerent and possibly under the influence around 1:10 a.m., Bosques said.
Yohn, an Emeryville resident, was driving at a high speed and refused to stop, Bosques said.
Yohn hit the motorcyclist, and then crashed into a utility pole and fence, Bosques said.
The Mini Cooper burst into flames at the intersection of Fremont Boulevard and Decoto Road near a bank, Bosques said.
The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
