San Diego – 3 dead, 5 injured after crash on interstate ramp |

A series of crashes triggered by an alleged drunken driver left three men dead and five other people injured, including a man who was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the California Highway Patrol said Saturday.

The suspected drunken driver, William Cady, 25, of San Diego, was arrested at a hospital on suspicion of drunken driving, the CHP said.  He was driving north from Interstate 805 onto the transition ramp to westbound state Route 52 when he lost control, according to the CHP.

The vehicle veered off the right side of the road, careened across a dirt embankment and rolled several times, a CHP dispatcher said.

Four passengers in the Escalade were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the spinning SUV, the dispatcher said. Two of those ejected were killed instantly, he said.

A fifth passenger, wearing a seat belt, was also killed in the crash, on a curving ramp just north of Clairemont Mesa, according to the CHP.

Two of the men ejected died at the scene. The San Diego County Medical Examiner has identified them as Taylor Bednarski, 29, and Shon Gilliam, 23.

Another occupant, Jeffrey Becker, 35, who was wearing his seatbelt, was also pronounced dead at the scene, investigators confirmed.

Marion, N.C. – Alleged DUI driver charged with murder in death of unborn baby |

Donald Willis, the first person charged in North Carolina with killing an unborn child in a drunk driving accident appeared before a judge this morning.

Willis faces about 40 years in prison as the result of a change in the law that allows prosecution under the state\’s murder charges, but faces even more time than that if he\’s found guilty of DWI and felony serious injury charges in the accident.

Marion police say the 53-year-old suspect was intoxicated when he crossed the center line of Seagle Street, and totaled the car driven by 18-year-old Emily Dalton.  Her unborn baby died last week.

Prosecutors say Dalton is still in the hospital, but improving.

They say this case will work it’s way through the courts as any other and will be the first test of a law aimed at prosecuting reckless behavior in the death of an unborn child.

Brad Greenway, district attorney, “an act done so recklessly and carelessly that it\’s inherently dangerous to life, would be the murder of an unborn child.  So I suppose if you were involved in a motor vehicle race, speed competition, you could also be charged under this statute.”

Willis is scheduled for a probable cause hearing January 29th.  He is currently being held in the McDowell County jail.

Memphis – Drunk Driver Wanted: One Teen Dead, Four Others Injured |

Memphis police are looking for a man who left four people hurt, two of them critically injured, and a teenage girl dead.  Police say he drove five people home from a north Memphis bar overnight and got into a terrible accident and ran from the scene before help got there.

For Kenya Dupree, it’s difficult enough accepting her older sister is gone.

“I have been crying all day,” she said.

It’s even worse knowing the person who killed her never stuck around to face what he did, “They were at the bar last night and they say he was drunk driving.”

Police are looking for the man who they say drove five people home from a Jackson Avenue bar early Saturday morning and crashed his car on North Watkins, just feet from Shakerri Dupree’s home. She died from the crash. Police say the driver ran away before paramedics even arrived.

“We want anyone who has any information to come forward as soon as possible,” said Lameka Johson, Shakerri’s cousin.

The car hit two trees, lost a door, and partially took down a homeowner’s front porch.

“I get off work at 2:15 a.m. and by the time I got in the bathtub, I heard the big noise. I thought someone was breaking in my house,” said Lovina White, who lives directly across the street from where the accident happened.

Two 20-year-old girls are still at the MED in critical condition.

Shakerri leaves behind more than just her sister and cousins.

“She was a girl full of life and full of joy. She had a daughter too, one year old. Just had a birthday last Sunday,” said Kenya.

Kenya wants answers for Shakerri’s child. She believes she knows the driver’s name, “He goes by the name of Duke.”

They were told his name was Duke by someone who escaped the tragedy.

“One of the girls that left the club with them- a sister of a girl in critical condition- she came to the house and told us she was in the car before the accident but she got dropped off around the corner first,” said Johnson.

She escaped a crash where police are still hunting for the person to blame.

If you think you know the driver, call Crimestoppers at 528-CASH.

Police say the car was registered to a person who lives on Lynchburg street in Raleigh but when officers went there, the driver was nowhere to be found.
