Queens, N.Y. – Suspected drunk driver kills man, injures another in horrific crash: cops |

An apparently drunk driver killed a 39-year-old Queens man in a fiery crash early Saturday morning, police and witnesses said.

James Celauro, 23, was drunk behind the wheel of his 2006 Ford sedan when it smashed into Jimmy Sinisi’s car at 1 a.m. Saturday at 98th Street and 159th Avenue in Howard Beach, police said.

The 23-year-old driver of the Ford then spun out of control and wound up smashing into a nearby home.

After colliding with the Saturn, the Ford slammed into a parked car and careened through a stone partition into the front lawn of a house and caught fire, witnesses said.

Sinisi was removed from the crushed Saturn and rushed to Jamaica Hospital, where he died, police said. A 37-year-old man riding with him was taken to the same hospital in stable condition.

The Ford also struck a parked vehicle.

“The driver was trapped, they got out the jaws of life to get him out,” said one witness.

The accident happened around 1 a.m. in Howard Beach, Queens.

“They put him on a gurney and started giving him CPR, that’s when I knew it was serious.”

The driver of the Ford ran from his burning car to check on the driver and passenger in the Saturn.

“Then he came to my stoop and took his shoe off, he was limping,” the witness said. “He said ‘They went through the light’ even though there’s no light at the intersection.”

Police said the Ford driver appeared to be drunk but refused a Breathalyzer test. He was taken to Jamaica Hospital in serious condition, and his blood was being drawn to test for alcohol.

Charges against him are pending, police said.
