Winton, California: DUI suspected in fatal weekend crash |

A 27-year-old man was killed Sunday after a two-car crash south of Winton — and California Highway Patrol reports DUI may have been a factor. The Merced County Coroner has identified the victim as Matthew Frisk of Atwater.

The crash was reported around 2 p.m. on Winton Way near Gertrude Avenue. Edgar Tapia, 22, of Winton was driving northbound on Winton Way in a 1996 Honda Civic at a high rate of speed, approaching Gertrude Avenue, according to Officer John Patterson.

Meanwhile. Frisk was driving a 1997 Nissan Sentra westbound on Gertrude Avenue, crossing Winton Way. It’s unknown whether the driver of the Sentra halted for the stop sign posted on Gertrude Avenue at Winton Way. The Honda collided broadside into the left front door of the Sentra. The Sentra slid across the southbound lane of Winton Way in a northeasterly direction, and its rear right side struck a metal pole on the west shoulder. The Honda came to a rest in the northbound No. 2 lane of Winton Way. No passengers were in either car.
