Lubbock, TX: Man faces manslaughter charge after death of bicyclist | Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

A Lubbock man faces manslaughter charges in the death of a bicyclist early Saturday morning.

Benito Capillan, 23, drove a 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 in the 3600 block of Fourth Street when he rammed a bicycle ridden by Britta Silva Schneider, 32, according to a report from Lubbock police Sgt. Robert Hook.

The incident occurred about 2:30 a.m.

Capillan approached Schneider’s bicycle from behind, and he failed to control the vehicle’s speed, striking the two-wheeler from behind, throwing Schneider to the opposite lane, Hook reported.

The bicycle caught onto the undercarriage of the pickup truck, which dragged it about 150 yards, the report states.

EMS transported Schneider to the University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead a short time after, said Lubbock police Sgt. Jonathan Stewart.

Hook’s report stated Capillan was arrested and charged with intoxicated manslaughter. The report lists the incident as being alcohol-related. However, the report does not give a blood alcohol level.
