Police charged a 23-year-old woman with numerous felonies after she caused a fatal crash by driving the wrong way on the Interstate 440 Beltline before dawn Sunday.
A state trooper stopped Sarah Aimee Carden on the Beltline near Six Forks Road after the crash on the westbound side of the interstate between Hillsborough Street and Western Boulevard, Raleigh police said. Six Forks Road is east of the crash scene.
Police said the crash happened about 4:20 a.m. when Carden drove the wrong way on the beltline and a vehicle trying to avoid her went out of control and flipped over multiple times.
Police spokesman Jim Sughrue said the accident killed Junior BajanTshimpangil i, 30, of Raleigh and seriously injured Adrina Angelica Moore, 25, of Raleigh. Debris from their car was were scattered across the road, and it was closed for about four hours.
Sughrue said investigators charged Carden with felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, felony hit and run resulting in death, felony fleeing to elude arrest, careless and reckless driving, driving while impaired and traveling the wrong way on a dual lane highway.
